SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Best Original Music Score

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Before coming, I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt like that was during my marriage. There's a dialogue from a Hindi film called "Mere paas ma hai," which means "I have nothing but I have a mother," so mother's here, her blessings are there with me. I am grateful for her to have come all the way. And I want to thank the Academy for being so kind, all the jury members. I want to thank Sam Schwartz, I/D PR, all the crew of Slumdog, Mr. Gulzar, Raqueeb Alam, Blaaze, my musicians in Chennai and Mumbai. And I want to tell something in Tamil, which says, which I normally say after every award which is... "God is great." Thank you.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Best Song

"Jai Ho"
Music by A.R. Rahman; Lyric by Gulzar

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

A.R. Rahman:
I just want to thank again the whole crew of Slumdog Millionaire, especially Danny Boyle for giving such a great opportunity. And the whole, all the people from Mumbai. The essence of the film which is about optimism and the power of hope in the lives, and all my life I had a choice of hate and love. I chose love and I'm here. God bless.

ACADEMY AWARDS HISTORY

This is the first Academy Award nomination for Gulzar.

Including his two other nominations this year for Original Score and Original Song for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, this is the third Academy Award nomination for A.R. Rahman.

Cool new stuff that makes Google so hot!

Why should users rave about Google? Andre Resende, a computer science undergraduate student at the University of Campinas in Brazil should know. When the company invited users to send in designs for its new favicon - the small icon that greets you when you access Google on your URL bar or your bookmarks list - Resende submitted one. His placement of a white 'g' on a color-blocked background was highly recognizable and attractive, so it inspired Google's new favicon. But that is only the tip of the iceberg as far as Google's interaction with its end user is concerned. One peek at Google Lab tells you how smart the company is with recognizing the users' pulse and resting its innovation on such simple needs. And what's more, users have a free hand in playing with the company's innovation while they are still in gestation. Here's is how Google has been changing the way we do things and building, bit-by-bit, the technology bellweather that tech buffs and geeks love to track and sometimes follow.

Indian story at the 2009 Australian Open

Indian tennis had one of its most successful-ever Grand Slams at the 2009 Australian Open as Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi won the mixed doubles crown on February 1, 2009. Yuki Bhambri had won the boys' singles the day before, and though there was disappointment for Leander Paes in the doubles and for Sania in the singles, all in all it was a memorable fortnight for Indian tennis. As we take a look at the performance of Indian players at the Australian Open, here is hoping that the momentum is maintained and India's tennis players go from strength to strength in 2009.

The pair of Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi were given a wild card to enter the main draw of the mixed doubles event at the 2009 Australian Open. Sania and Bhupathi, who were runners-up in the mixed doubles at the 2008 Australian Open, made the most of the opportunity as they combined well and had an easy passage to the final. The Indian pair faced the French-Israeli combination of Nathalie Dechy and Andy Ram in the final, and the contest was thought to be too close to call. However, Sania and Bhupathi dominated their opponents and won the final 6-3, 6-1 in only 59 minutes. This was Bhupathi's 11th Grand Slam title, while it was the first for Sania. In fact, Sania is the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title.
